Trust Is Not a Soft Skill. It Is the Math the Market Is Doing About Your Brand ~via Jeanniey Walden
TRUST compounds, RELATIONSHIPS matter…and showing up with AUTHENTICITY always outperforms chasing shortcuts. Thanks for a great share Jeanniey. /Ted
Every brand has always lived or died on a quiet calculation happening in the customer's head. David Ogilvy knew it and built an empire off of knowing how to get it right! What calculation do they do? It's simple and we do it all the time too.
Do I believe what these people say about themselves? Does the experience match the promise? Would I put my own name on recommending them?
That calculation is trust, and it has never been a soft, fuzzy, nice-to-have thing. It is the math your customers are doing about your brand every single day, whether you are measuring it or not. And, it's quite possible the only math that matters.
In 2026 the Rules Around Trust Started To Change.... But Then
In 2026 the third party we lovingly call AI started to take the middle seat and do that same math but a bit differently. When a buyer wanted to know who the best option is, they stopped looking to you for answers and opinions. Instead, they asked ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity, and whatever those engines say about you and THAT becomes your brand before that prospect ever reaches your front door.
Be Warned
We are learning that there is context which these systems still cannot hold. Google and the AI engines routinely confuse brands that share a name, collapsing you into a competitor, a company that folded years ago, or someone in a completely different industry who happens to be called the same thing. The tools call it "entity confusion." You would call it watching your reputation get handed to a stranger. When the machine cannot tell which one is you, it guesses, and it does it with total confidence in front of your next customer.
Customers have already started to notice and the backlash is coming. SEO lives to see another day. Gartner found that 50 percent of US consumers would rather buy from brands that keep generative AI out of their customer-facing content. Klaviyo's 2026 research shows only 13 percent of consumers completely trust AI, and 32 percent trust a brand less the moment they sense its content was machine-made.
The hype promised that AI would make brands feel closer to people. For half the market, it is doing the reverse. and quite frankly, I'm ok with that. In my world it has given purpose to in person events, PR, comms and content. I love that!
Trust is Still the Answer
The answer was never going to be more AI output. It is more trust, built on purpose, in a brand so clear that a machine cannot blur it and so real that a person still believes it. That is exactly what the AIR Method™ is built to do. Authenticity asks whether what you say matches what people actually experience with you. Inspiration asks whether you are moving people toward a future they want, or just adding to the noise. Relatability asks whether a customer can see themselves in you, or only squint at you from a distance. A brand with all three is legible to people and to the algorithms now speaking on its behalf.
So do a few things this week:
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity who you are and what you are known for, then see whether they describe your actual brand or a blurry composite of your whole category.
Stop trying to out-publish the market and start out-clarifying it, because one sharp, true message travels further than fifty vague ones.
Own your narrative in plain language, so the machine has something clear to repeat instead of something to guess at.
Your market is already doing the math on your brand, and now the machines are doing it too, out loud, whether you like the answer or not. You can run a free Trust Index scan to see exactly how your brand shows up when the algorithms describe you, and watch more of these conversations with executives at liftoffcompany.com/episodes. It is worth knowing your number before your customers, and the machines, decide it for you.
